2019 Video Trends to Watch

Storytelling in micro-moments. We know video is a hot trend these days but let’s pay attention to the meteoric rise. (Maybe explosion is a better word.) According to Cisco, 82% of internet traffic will be through video by 2021. Video can no longer be viewed as just one more distribution channel for your niched out content.

Do you have a definitive video marketing strategy in place?

Here are four video trends to watch:

Mobile dominance: Mobile is driving the increase in video viewing. In fact, according to a 2017 Facebook study, people are 1.5 times more likely to watch video daily on a smartphone than on a computer. And by 2020, they say over 75% of the world’s mobile data traffic will be video. Is your magazine’s messaging perfectly compatible with the mobile format?

Vlogging: A combination of a blog with both marketing and often personal videos, there are some who are doing this well right now. It’s a good way to grow and expand your audience. It’s also affordable— all you need is your smartphone, some editing software and a Youtube channel. Will it become an effective way to reach your readers? We’ll see.

Live video: Daily watch times of live broadcasts are also increasing, according to the FB study. It’s all inter-connected–mobile drives much of it. As consumers are inundated with more and constant online messaging, live video captures attention quicker than you can say “Bring me some popcorn.”

Vertical video: Another trend to watch is the increase in use of vertical video. Vertical video is a game changer. Our TV and desktop screens–even our eyes–are horizontal so that’s the way it’s always been done. Until now. The vertical format is better suited to social media, with improved functionality. The big social media brands are jumping on this. Would your social marketing efforts be more effective if your videos are vertical?

As with any trends, you have to determine which ones are the right fit for your media business and your niche audience. But don’t be afraid to try out some new ideas and test tons to see what works best– or if at all.  Who knows–perhaps you’ll be a visionary/early adopter and move out way ahead of your competition!
